To construct a basic lamp out of anything remember these things:-

Start with the type of lamp holder. BC, ES or small ES
Then look at how it is to be fixed. You need to get a small thread about 8mm tall. The most popular size is 10mm diameter. You can use a wood nipple or back plate or even a bit of all threaded rod that can be secured to give the threaded nipple for the lamp holder.
Once you have the thread you can choose the type of lamp holder, by this I mean with or without a switch and the colour, metal or plastic.
Then think about the wiring. If you used an un-switched lamp holder you will need to add an in line switch in the mains cable.

It is important to ensure that the cord set or cable is protected throughout its route to the lamp holder from any sharp surfaces and the cable is held securely so that it cant be pulled out.
You must also be competent in doing this work before you start.
